There is something for everyone on the beaches of Cyprus. The whole family can enjoy the wide choice of water sports on offer, though if you just want to relax and sunbathe there’s plenty of sand available!
The many water sports on offer include windsurfing, diving, sailing and snorkelling and it is easy to hire equipment from the centres along the beaches.
Snorkelling
One of the most interesting places to snorkel is along the north coast of the Akamas peninsular where a huge variety of sealife roam between the rocky coves and tiny offshore islands.
If you prefer to stay closer to the shore it is still possible to see lots of tiny fish, sea anemones and sea urchins. You can hire out snorkelling equipment from many of the larger hotels or buy snorkel masks from local sports shops.
Diving
Diving is very popular in Cyprus because of the clear blue coastal waters and you can find a diving school in any resort on the island. These schools will approach tourists with offers of diving lessons for all ages and levels of experience. Hotels also run their own diving schools with many offering lessons in their own pools.
Ayia Napa and Larnaka are famous for their beautiful beaches and provide great diving experiences. Unlike many other countries, the Cyprus Tourism Association allows divers to explore wrecks of cargo boats and naval vessels.
Windsurfing
The best winds blow around the capes between Ayia Napa and Protaras and also in the Paphos region. Almost all of the beaches run windsuufing courses. Kiteboarding is starting to become popular in Ayia Napa. This involves being towed along at great speed by a giant kite!
Swimming
Most of the beaches in Cyprus offer safe bathing but some beaches in the Paphos area can be quite dangerous in rough weather. Make sure to take note of the warning notices displayed at the beaches. Red buoys indicate the safe swimming areas. Some beaches have trained lifeguards and first aid stations.
There are swimming pools in Nicosia (an Olympic size pool), Paphos, Larnaka and Limassol.
Sailing
Sailing is popular in Cyprus with the main marinas on the island located in Larnaka and Limassol. You can charter a yacht for the day or for longer cruises. Catamarans and smaller dinghies are available for hire from the beaches at Ayia Napa, Limassol, Latsi and Protaras.
The island is a sailor’s paradise with its waters offering ideal sailing conditions. From Cyprus you can sail to Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey and the GreekIslands
.
Water sports on the beach
For the thrill seekers on holiday there is a great selection of sports on offer. Water skiing, jet skis, banana boats and paragliding are all available. More sedate pastimes include pedaloes and airbed floating.
