Kyrenia (Girne)

Getting around

Kyrenia is a twenty minute drive from the capital, Nicosia. The airport at Ercan is 40 minutes away and Famagusta is1 hour and 20 minutes.

You can catch a taxi from Ercan airport into Kyrenia but if you are on a package holiday the tour operator will usually arrange transport to your accommodation.

Dolmus buses (shared taxis) run regularly to from the bus station to all the main towns in the north. You can also flag one down if you are on a main road but they are usually full before they leave the bus station!

Ferries

Ferries are available from Kyrenia to Alanya and Tasucu on the Turkish mainland. The ferry to Alanya takes about 3 hours and runs during the summer months. The Tasucu ferry is a year round service and a shorter journey of about 1hour and 45 minutes.

Excursions

Kyrenia is ideally placed for exploring the rest of Cyprus due to its location so you’ll find many tours and excursions on offer. St Hilarion, Nicosia and the mountain monasteries are all within easy reach and make a great day out.  There are some lovely beaches to the east and west which are also worth visiting.

For the more adventurous, Famagusta, Salamis and the Karpas Peninsula are rewarding one or two day excursions.

Boat trips

If you feel like taking a relaxing boat trip around the coastline you will be spoilt for choice. There are plenty of trips available from the harbour, all offering water activities such as swimming and snorkelling. Most excursions stop at a local bay and include lunch and drinks on board. Nighttime cruises are also available with dinner and live music included.
